Fish Curry || Fried Fish In Mustard Gravy || Bihar Style Machli Jhor
Hello, I am sharing Bihar style fish in mustard gravy
It is fried fish in mustard gravy.
Ingredients -
1. Rohu or Katla fish - 300Gm (in Bengali Cut)
2. Ginger-Garlic paste - 2 Tbsp
3. Mustard Paste - 2 Tbsp
3. Tomato-Onion Paste - 4 Tbsp(Tomato:Onion-1:1)
4. Coriander leaves - few (chopped)
5. Mustard oil - 100 ML
6. Turmeric powder - 2 Tsp
7. Red Chilli Powder - 2 Tsp
8. Pepper Powder - 2 Tsp
9. Methi/Fenugreek Seeds - 1/2 Tsp
10. Hing/Asafoetida - 1 Pinch
11. Salt - As per taste
Recipe -
Take a big bowl
Add 2 Tbsp ginger garlic paste
Add 1 Tsp turmeric powder
Add 1 tsp Red chilli powder
Add half tsp pepper powder
Add salt as per taste
Mix well (if you want can add few drops of water and mix)
Now coat cleaned fish pieces in masala
After coating all fish pieces, keep them 5 mins covered for marination. Here note do not over marinate fish.
Heat a pan on medium flame
Add 100 ML of mustard oil and heat properly
Add marinated fish pieces and fry on low-med flame. Here note keep aside leftover marinated masala
Fry fish for crispy brown texture on both side
Remove extra oil from pan and reuse same oil for gravy
Add half meethi seeds and let them splutter for few seconds
Now add 2 tbsp of yellow mustard paste and stir for 2 mins on low flame
Add 4 tbsp of onion-tomato paste and stir for 2 mins on low flame
Cover the lid and cook on low flame for 5 mins
Now add leftover marinated masala else add 1 tsp of ginger garlic paste
Stir well
Add 1 tsp turmeric powder
Add 1 tsp red chilli powder
Add half tsp pepper powder
Add 1 pinch of hing or asafoetida
Stir well for few mins till oil releases
Now add salt as per taste. Here note salt is there in fried fish
Add half cup if water and mix well and check for gravy consistency. If you want you can add more water
Now give a boil to gravy on med flame and add coriander leaves
Add fried fish and again give a boil
Transfer in serving bowl and serve with steamed or ghee rice
Very yummy and mouthwatering Bihar style fish in mustard gravy is a complete meal with steamed or ghee rice

I had got mustard leaves from my local vendor but he gave in large quantity that i was unable to use just in Sarson da saag, so i thought of trying it with daal same like palak wali daal. I tried it and it came out very nice, crunch in the taste and the rawness of mustard added a new taste or call Tadka to the flavour.
